HOW TO BID

What to Bid On:

As you read through the catalog for the first time, record the numbers of
all the lots you are interested in on a worksheet. If you are interested in
specific types of coins, be sure to check the catalog index.

How Much to Bid:

The price you bid is determined by you. You must remember the value
that you place on the coins. Check the values listed in the catalog and
decide what you are willing to pay. You should bid generously on the lots
you strongly wish to obtain. If there are some lots you would like to have 'if
the price is right', then you may want to place nominal bids on those lots.
Because a number of collectors choose to bid on many lots, the number of
successful bids will be relatively small. This is controlled by a very active
market. You can safely extend your bidding (and take advantage of a
'bargain') by placing a dollar total limit on your bids. Should your total be
reached before all your bids are executed, we will then terminate your bid-
ding.

Remember that your bids are limits. It is possible, and quite often does
occur, that you will succeed in purchasing a lot for less than your bid since
we start the floor bidding at about 5-10% above the second highest mail
bid. Example: You bid $500.00 on the lot and the next highest mail bid is
$400.00, we start the lot bid at $425.00. If there are no bids from the floor,
you will then be awarded the lot at $425.00 - or if the floor bidding stops at
perhaps $450.00 or $475.00 then you will receive the lot at a small advance
above the top floor bid. If bidding continues above the $500.00, then that
floor bidder will be awarded the lot.

How to Fill Out the Bid Sheet:

On the Bid Sheet you will observe that there are two different column
headings. Lots and Bids. When you decide on the lots you want to bid on,
enter the lot numbers under the proper column and the maximum amounts
you are willing to pay for those lots in the proper column.

Commentaries based on cataloging over 300 sales and 51 years collecting - since 1928
(including THE LARCEST A N A. SALE EVER HELD-1977)

Our 314th sale January 26-27 held in conjunction with the Numismatic Association of
Sobthern California at Los Angeles continued to reflect the "BOOM" in the coin and
currency market. Many new records were set. The limited supply of choice and rare
numismatic material, combined with the strong demand and backed by adequate funds is
the formula which results in rapidly rising values. We had occasion recently to compare the
values of two and three years ago with the current market and note a number have more
than doubled since then.

While gold, large size U S. currency and silver dollars seem to be the most popular today,
we believe that nice copper coins (Colonials, Half Cents, Large Cents and Small Cents) are
somewhat undervalued. While the other series have risen markedly the past decade or so,
many of these coppers can be obtained at prices which have prevailed for some years. The
Two-Cent, Three-Cent and Five-Cent pieces, after being dormant for several years, joined
the silver and gold in popularity about two years ago.

The current strong demand for "Choice" and "Gem" has had an interesting side-effect.
Some have been rejecting "Mint-State-60" specimens claiming the usual "bag-marks"
disqualify it as uncirculated. Under the A N A. grading system, the usual "uncirculated"
coin will be just that — no wear but with the usual amount of minute marks acquired by
being shipped in sacks and then wrapped into rolls by machines. Those that survive with
only a few bag-marks are graded Choice "BU-60+" and the very few that have a minimum
of marks then are graded "GEM BU-65." Rarely, does a specimen come virtually free of any
marks and this would be "Superb GEM BU-65-F !" Please do not bid on coins described as
"BU-60" and expect to receive "Choice BU-60+" or "GEM BU-65."

With the rapid advance in values, many true collectors have found that they can
assemble a nice appearing collection within their budget by being content with "BU-60" or
nice circulated specimens. These too have been advancing in values, although not quite as
rapidly as the elusive "Choice" and "Gem" grades.

Since a number of our friends have remarked about the letter sent us by the Coral Ridge
Presbyterian Church regarding the sale of the James Lindsay collection, we have been
considering publishing some of the other complimentary letters received over the years
thanking us for the help and service given them in disposing of their numismatic holdings.
Perhaps we will occasionally do so. We believed over the years that the results we obtained
for the consignors was self-evidence of the research and effort devoted to obtaining the
maximum results for the owners. The continuing flow of collections for our 315 sales
extending back to the 1930's has been ample reward. We hope to continue meriting the
confidence placed in us.

361. 1798 B-7, Knob 9, Choice Very Fine Obverse with some portions closer to Extremely
Fine; struck from “dished dies” resulting in the reverse being mostly Extremely Fine with

Struck from “dished dies” resulting in center receiving more wear. Trends VF-20 at 600.

rect by placing clouds over first and last stars, but the points of the stars “peep out” from

of Mr. Martin Field. He is known to own the most comprehensive
collection of Morgan Dollars in the world.

A highly successful attorney of 35 years, he is retired today and serves as
a consultant to one of California’s largest real estate financial holding
corporations.

He has founded the National Aid to the Visually Handicapped and
contributes rare coins through the Martin Field Educational Foundation,
which was established 10 years ago. He graduated from Hastings College of
Law and also served as President of its Board of Governors. He is also a
member of the Society of VAM Collectors, Inc.

of 400 struck! The rarest “P” mint dollar! With the interest of gold the way it is today,

Smithsonian Institution, the only one that I have seen was the UNC-60 coin in the 1973
Kreisberg/Cohen Sale.” He does not state if that had a re-engraved date. The trends of
$1,600 UNC. for a “normal date” seems ultra conservative in keeping with Aker’s
research. This highly desirable “CONDITION-CENSUS” piece worth?

Superior strike to most seen of this date. Akers states, “Very scarce in high grade and I
have seen only two or three specimens that could legitimately be called mint state.” He

field. Akers states, “Most known specimens have indistinct or missing denticles. Always
sofdy struck on the eagle’s legs and arrow feathers. This date is difficult to obtain above
EF and the only uncirculated one that I can recall seing was the Scanlon coin.” The legs
and feathers on this one are SHARPER STRUCK than on the plate coin in Akers’ book.
Trends EF $500 & UNC. $1,700; this worth about 900.

829. 1851-D Brilliant Borderline UNC-55+ , only faint rub away from Full Mint State!
Superior in strike to most known specimens. Akers states, “Scarce in all grades, and very
rare above EF. I have never seen a full mint state coin and only two or three others that
could legitimately be called AU.” Surely worth the “theoredcal” trends value for UNC. of
$1,700. Where could you find a choicer specimen?

830. 1852-C About UNC-55, only slight rubbing, edge nick rev. Akers states, “Always seen
weakly struck, particularly on hair around Liberty’s face and on eagle on rev. The 1852-C
is very scarce in all grades and is, in fact, very nearly as rare as the much lower mintage
and more highly regarded 1852-D.” Akers lists only one UNC. and 5 AU specimens
offered at aucdon back to 1944! Therefore the “UNC” Trends of $1,800 is certainly far
too low; this choice one worth?
